Beyond visiting and volunteering, those who seek to create a more lasting relationship with a travel destination can consider investing in it. For non-residents, where local laws permit, owning property is one of the best ways to invest. Here we mention one such investment opportunity in Zanzibar.

10 Must Follow Zanzibar Influencers on Social MediaWhy did we choose them? While passing through Dubai on the way back from Zanzibar, we visited the 2016 Arabian Travel Market. At the Zanzibar stand, we met Sebastian Dietzold, Managing Director of CPS Live, the real estate team behind the $120million Fumba Town Development Project (FTD) in Zanzibar. Fumba Town itself is located 20 minutes’ drive from Stone Town.

During our conversation, we learned about potential investment opportunities in Zanzibar in the owner-occupier and buy-to-let property markets aimed at both residents and tourists.

According to Tanzania Invest, growth in Tanzanian real estate is being driven by a number of factors including population growth* (currently estimated at 53.47 million and expected to double by 2050 at an annual growth rate of 2.79%), easier access to mortgages, rapid urbanization and a high youth population. In addition, World Bank data shows that tourist numbers continue to rise generating a market for holiday accommodation and short term letting.

Fumba Town is seeking to address the gap in housing supply through the construction of 1,283 housing units, ranging from lower-end to luxury properties. According to Sebastian, the units will be constructed using innovative and renewable materials adapted to suit Zanzibar’s climate and environmental conditions. Promising a return on investment partly due to Zanzibar’s proximity to one of Africa’s fastest growing cities, Dar es Salaam, and an expanding, educated and upwardly mobile East African working class, Fumba Town Development presents an interesting opportunity for prospective investors.

While African economies continue to face uncertainty, a recent Ernst & Young Africa Attractiveness Index report suggests that the longer term growth picture for the continent is positive. Therefore we’ve chosen to include the Fumba Town Development in our influencer list in a bid to promote investment opportunities in Africa.
