Famished bellies propelled eager hands to dip into this tender lamb tajine. The flavours exploded in our mouths! Ditch your plans to dine at a restaurant and schedule a cooking experience, or meal with Khadija right in the middle of a friendly neighbourhood in Essaouira. It’s an incredibly immersive experience into Moroccan hospitality and food culture. If you’re lucky, you might even get Khadija’s husband to teach you a thing or two about Gnawa music on his lute.
3. Madrid, Spain
Cocido stew | Devour Madrid (via La Bola)
Madrid is more than a place for Flamenco and stunning architecture. It offers an incredible food culture scene. When visiting, we highly suggest a food tour with Devour Madrid. On our tour, we experienced a behind the scenes look at the process of making Cocido broth; a savoury mix of beef, chicken, ham, chorizo, chickpeas and potatoes slow cooked for 4 to 6 hours in a traditional ceramic pot called pucheros. It tasted like years of flavour had been waiting for us all within one small pot. La Bola on Calle la Bola is not to be missed!
4. Gozo, Malta
Mekren’s pie | Mekren’s Bakery
Our mouths salivate as we remember biting into a Mekren’s pie with raisins, green peas and goat’s cheese. It was a blissful moment when you realise that a flaky, warm pie can elicit feelings of joy. This feeling only enhances your experience on the magical island of Gozo. Take a food tour with private chef, Karl Mallia, and you’ll understand exactly what we’re talking about!
5. Stonetown, Zanzibar
Nyama ya ng’ombe (Grilled Beef Steak) | Baharia Restaurant
There’s steak, and then there’s mouth-watering grilled beef imported from Nairobi, seasoned with a mouthwatering concoction of Zanzibari spices. Baharia Restaurant is located within the historical Serena Zanzibar Hotel, and it is a must visit on your exploration of Stone Town. We closed our eyes in appreciation just after one bite. It was that good! Another dish worth mentioning was the samaki wa kupaka (boneless fillet of sea fish simmered in coconut and Zanzibar spices). Conveniently located only a seven-minute walk from Forodhani Gardens, feast away at Baharia, and then head over to Forodhani for the sunset diving show by local boys.
6. Kurumba, Maldives
Potato Rosti with Smoked Salmon | Thila
A potato and leek rosti topped with smoked salmon, grilled asparagus, avocado salsa, scrambled eggs, and greens. Pair that with a glass of Moet for breakfast for the complete package! We can’t forget to mention the stunning view of the Indian Ocean that comes along with this luxe breakfast…yes please!
7. San Diego, California
Farm Scramble | Hash House a Go Go
A true San Diego style breakfast! The portion sizes at this place are bigger than the eyes can handle. Let’s just say we practically developed growing food babies at the end of our trip! If you want a visual feast taller than the mouth can handle, order the sage fried chicken tower!
8. Valencia, Spain
Horchata | Valencia Urban Adventures
Valencian horchata is a refreshing mix of tigernut milk, water and sugar. It is a very popular drink amongst locals and is believed to be a great cholesterol regulator.
